Whether you have a cabin tucked back in the woods, or live on one of the mountaintops with a view across distant valleys and hills, you’re usually only a short drive to the quaint county seat of Jasper, population 534, located on Scenic Highway 7 and nestled in the Little Buffalo River Valley. This amazing small town has a grocery store, hardware and lumber store, bank, bakery, florist, dentist, family doctor, chiropractor, pharmacy, nursing home, funeral home, discount stores, auto parts store, library, museum, a courthouse in the middle of the charming square, city hall, post office, 6 restaurants, 3 motels, one Bed and Breakfast, and a city park on the banks of the Little Buffalo River.

The only other incorporated city in Newton County is Western Grove, located on Highway 65 in the Northeast corner of the county. The remaining names you hear, such as Parthenon, Deer, Low Gap, Ponca, Compton, Mount Judea, Bass, Hasty, and Marble Falls, are locations or communities, some with post offices and small country stores. Some names, such as Mt Sherman, Mockingbird, Shiloh and Wayton, come from the mountain they are located on.
